Because oil well service vehicles operate within a challenging environment, drivers may need to work for longer periods than the cycle limits allow. In these situations, a motor carrier can apply for a special permit. If granted, the permit authorizes the motor carrier and their designated drivers to operate under special terms and conditions for a maximum of 1 year.

SHIFT
- Available driving: 13 hours
- Available on duty: 14 hours
- Maximum shift length: 26 hours
- Shift reset (Off duty): 8 hours
- Off duty at well site and a consecutive off duty may be combined for a shift reset.
The MiX ELD will send a "Near Shift Reset" alert when a driver is 30 minutes away from a shift reset even when they are off duty or in a sleeper berth.
DAILY LIMITS
Click here to learn more about daily limits.
- Available driving: maximum 13 hours
- Available on duty: maximum 14 hours
- Off duty: at least 10 hours
- Shift reset: 8 hours consecutive
- Additional off duty time: 2 hours
- This may not be used for shift reset.
- The additional two hours may be split into 30 min increments.
- The off duty may be deferred.
- Note: If there is off duty outstanding for the day, the available values will be limited by the amount of time remaining until the driver MUST go off duty in order to comply with the daily off duty requirement. This is regardless of whether the driver has not used all up all of their shift or daily on duty or driving.
CYCLE
- None
- Off duty required: 3 x continuous 24 Hours within 24 rolling days
- Cycle Switch from Oil Field: 72 hours continuous off duty
- Cycle Switch to Oil Field: None
SLEEPER BERTH
- Full shift reset: 8 continuous hours
- Partial shift rest: Split Sleeper Berth:
|
Single sleeper
|
Split sleeper
|
---|---|---|
Minimum length | 2 hours | 4 hours |
Maximum length | 8 hours | 8 hours |
- 2 periods > minimum length
- When added together must be at least 8 hours
- Time after first sleeper is deducted from available time
Note the Work Shift limits when using the sleeper berth
In addition to the daily limits, a driver must comply with the work shift limits. See each active rule set for the specified minimum and maximum hours.
- Stop driving after 13 hours driving time (before and after each eligible sleeper berth period).
- Stop driving after 14 hours on-duty time (before and after each eligible sleeper berth period).
- Stop driving after 26 hours of elapsed time in a work shift. A sleeper berth work shift includes the periods surrounding a sleeper berth period. It includes all activities since the previous sleeper berth period until the next sleeper berth period but excludes the current sleeper berth period.
ADVERSE DRIVING EXEMPTION
- The purpose is to get a load or passengers to a safe place (i.e. a truck stop) not to complete the trip.
- Driving time: Extends day and shift up to 2 hours.
- On-duty time: Extends day and shift up to 2 hours.
- Off-duty time: Reduces daily off-duty requirement up to 2 hours.
- Shift length: Does not extend 16-hour shift limit.
- Ends immediately when the driver goes off duty.
OFF DUTY DEFERRAL
- May not defer shift reset off duty (8 hours core rest)
- Does not extend shift totals, only the day
- Cannot use if split sleeper was used
- Must have had 8 hours of core rest
- Deferred time on day 1 must be added to core rest (shift reset time) on day 2
- In 2 days you may not exceed:
- 26 hours driving
- 28 hours on duty
- In 2 days you must have 20 hours off duty.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
- Should total off duty for the day equal to or exceed 10 hours, but it is all classified as shift reset time, a driver will still be in violation if it does not include 2 hours of "Other off duty", e.g. 8h shift reset that started 3 hours before the end of the previous day and 8 hours shift reset starting 5 hours before the end of the current day with no other off duty.
- A driver does not need to have shift reset time in the day if they are not going to defer off duty. This is on condition that they do not drive after the 16-hour shift limit, e.g. 2 x 5 hours other off duty in the day would be compliant as long they do not drive after the 16th hour.
- No off-duty is required on a day if there is no driving on that day. This is on the condition that the driver takes 8 hours off duty before starting to drive.
