SHIFT
- Available driving: 15 hours
- Available on duty: 18 hours
- Maximum shift length: 20 hours
- Shift reset (Off duty): 8 hours
Cycle 1 is a 7-day period in which a driver is allowed to drive a maximum of 15 hours per shift and to be on duty for 18 hours maximum per shift.
A driver may not drive after having been on duty for 20 hours since the shift has started, which will include any off duty. When a driver has made use of a sleeper berth since their last reset, their shift elapsed time limit should be reduced from 20 hours to 18 hours.
If you extend the shift driving (for adverse driving conditions), it has to be included in the 20 hours shift limit. Remember that the adverse driving condition allows the driver to get to a safe place when there is an adverse driving condition and cannot be used to extend the driving time to get to a destination.
The shift automatically resets after having been off duty for 8 hours continuously. The MiX ELD will send a "Near Shift Reset" alert when a driver is 30 minutes away from a shift reset even when they are in off duty or in a sleeper berth.
DAILY LIMITS
- None
CYCLE
- Duration: Rolling 7 days
- Available on duty: 80 hours
- Cycle reset (Off duty): 36 hours
- Off duty required: 1 x continuous 24 Hours within 14 rolling days.
- Cycle Switch: 36 hours continuous off duty to move to a 14-day cycle.
The cycle is a rolling 7 days, which means drivers do not have to take off duty to reset the cycle. Drivers can carry on working as long as they have not exceeded the allowed 80 hours on duty in the previous 7 days.
36 hours continuous off duty will reset the cycle and will start accumulating the available 80 hours again. A driver needs one 24-hour off-duty period in the cycle, i.e. within 14 days.
SLEEPER BERTH
- Full shift reset: 8 continuous hours
- Split Sleeper Berth:
|
Single sleeper |
Team sleeper |
---|---|---|
Minimum length | 2 hours | 4 hours |
Maximum length | 8 hours | 8 hours |
- Partial shift reset:
-
- 2 periods > minimum length
- When added together must be at least 8 hours
- Time after the first sleeper is deducted from available time
-
If a driver is in the sleeper berth for 8 hours, the shift will reset automatically.
There is also a provision for team sleeper hours where one driver rests and the other driver works.
The split sleeper berth is where there is a minimum of two hours required and a maximum of 8 hours. If the 8 hours is exceeded it becomes a complete reset. Anything less than 2 hours is not valid sleeper berth time and cannot be used for a shift reset. It will however be included in the 20 hours of maximum shift time and reduce the available shift time.
If it is a valid sleeper berth time of two hours and above it will not be included in the 20 hours shift maximum limit.

Note the Work Shift limits when using sleeper berth
In addition to the daily limits, a driver must comply with the work shift limits.
-
-
- Stop driving after 15 hours of driving time (before and after each eligible sleeper berth period).
- Stop driving after 18 hours on-duty time (before and after each eligible sleeper berth period).
- Stop driving after 20 hours of elapsed time in a work shift. A sleeper berth work shift includes the periods surrounding a sleeper berth period. It includes all activities since the previous sleeper berth period until the next sleeper berth period but excludes the current sleeper berth period.

ADVERSE DRIVING EXEMPTION
-
The purpose is to get a load or passengers to a safe place (e.g. a truck stop) not to complete the trip.
- Driving time: Extends shift up to 2 hours.
- On-duty time: Extends shift up to 2 hours.
- Shift length: Does not extend the 16-hour shift limit.
- Ends immediately when driver goes off duty.
Adverse driving is input data and will adjust the hours when that event is raised. When the work state changes to off duty, the adverse driving exception will be reset. This will show as adverse driving in the driver's log viewer and the overview page.
OFF DUTY DEFERRAL
