SHIFT
- Available driving: 13 hours
- Available on duty: 14 hours
- Maximum shift length: 16 hours
- Shift reset (Off duty): 8 hours
Cycle 1 is a 7 day period in which a driver is allowed to drive a maximum of 13 hours per shift and to be on duty for 14 hours maximum per shift.
A driver may not drive after having been on duty for 16 hours since the shift has started, which will include any off-duty and sleeper berth, etc. If you extend the shift driving (for adverse driving conditions), it has to be included in the 16 hours shift limit. Remember that the adverse driving condition allows the driver to get to a safe place when there is an adverse driving condition and cannot be used to extend driving time to get to a destination.
The shift automatically resets after having been off duty for 8 hours continuously.
The MiX ELD will send a "Near Shift Reset" alert when a driver is 30 minutes away from a shift reset even when they are in off duty or in a sleeper berth.
DAILY LIMITS
Click here to learn more about daily limits.
Daily driving must also be taken into consideration, which means that even though a driver has a certain maximum hours for a shift, the daily driving hours will also impact the available hours of the shift. A driver's available hours will thus be impacted by the time that is available in the shift, the cycle and the daily driving time. (If a driver has less time available in the cycle than what is available in the shift, it means that the shift time will be limited by the available hours in the cycle but this is also limited by the number of hours available for daily driving). The day resets after the driver's start of day.
- Available driving: maximum 13 hours
- Available on duty: maximum 14 hours
- Off duty: at least 10 hours
- Shift reset: 8 hours consecutive
- Additional off-duty time: 2 hours
- This may not be used for shift reset.
- The additional two hours may be split into 30 min increments.
- The off-duty may be deferred.
- Note: If there is off duty outstanding for the day, the available values will be limited by the amount of time remaining until the driver MUST go off duty in order to comply with the daily off duty requirement. This is regardless of whether the driver has not used up all of their shift or daily on duty or driving.
CYCLE
- Duration: Rolling 7 days
- Available on duty: 70 hours
- Cycle reset (Off duty): 36 hours
- Off duty required: 1 x continuous 24 Hours within 14 rolling days
- Cycle Switch: 36 hours continuous off duty to move to a 14-day cycle
The cycle is a rolling 7 days, which means drivers do not have to take off duty to reset the cycle. Drivers can carry on working as long as they have not exceeded the allowed 70 hours on duty during any period of 7 consecutive days.
It is important to understand that the cycle is a “sliding window” of any 7 consecutive days. Therefore, the driver must always check that the total on-duty time for the previous 6 days plus the on-duty time for the current day is less than or equal to 70 hours (i.e., Total on-duty hours for previous 6 days + Total on-duty hours for current day ≤ 70 hours).
Ref: Alberta Motor Transport Association, Alberta Reference Guide for Hours of Service Training Development, June 23, 2008.
36 hours continuous off duty will reset the cycle and will start accumulating the available 70 hours again. A driver needs one 24-hour off duty period in the cycle, i.e. within 14 days.
SLEEPER BERTH
- Full shift reset: 8 continuous hours
- Partial shift rest: Split Sleeper Berth:
|
Single sleeper |
Team sleeper |
---|---|---|
Minimum length | 2 hours | 4 hours |
Maximum length | 10 hours | 8 hours |
- 2 periods > minimum length
- When added together must be at least 10 hours (single) or 8 hours (team).
- For Team Sleeper:
- the 2 x hours of Other off duty is still required
- the 13-hour driving limit and 14-hour on-duty daily limits may not be exceeded as split sleeper does not extend daily limits.
- must have had 8 hours of core rest
- Time after the first sleeper is deducted from available time.
If a driver is in the sleeper berth for 8 hours, the shift will reset automatically.
There is also provision for team sleeper hours where one driver rests and the other driver works.
The split sleeper berth is where there is a minimum of two hours required and a maximum of 8 hours for the team and 10 hours for a single driver. If the 10 hours is exceeded it becomes a complete reset. Anything less than 2 hours is not valid sleeper berth time and cannot be used for a shift reset. It will however be included in the 16 hours maximum shift time. If it exceeds two hours it will not be included in the 20 hours shift maximum limit.

Note the Work Shift limits when using sleeper berth
In addition to the daily limits, a driver must comply with the work shift limits.
- Stop driving after 13 hours driving time (before and after each eligible sleeper berth period).
- Stop driving after 14 hours on-duty time (before and after each eligible sleeper berth period).
- Stop driving after 16 hours of elapsed time in a work shift. A sleeper berth work shift includes the periods surrounding a sleeper berth period. It includes all activities since the previous sleeper berth period until the next sleeper berth period but excludes the current sleeper berth period.
ADVERSE DRIVING EXEMPTION
- The purpose is to get a load or passengers to a safe place (i.e. a truck stop) not to complete the trip
- Driving time: Extends day and shift up to 2 hours
- On-duty time: Extends day and shift up to 2 hours
- Off-duty time: Reduces daily off-duty requirement by up to 2 hours
- Shift length: Does not extend 16-hour shift limit
- Ends immediately when the driver goes off duty.
Adverse driving is input data and will adjust the hours when that event is raised. When the work state changes to off duty, the adverse driving exception will be reset. This will show as adverse driving in the driver's log viewer and the overview page.
OFF DUTY DEFERRAL
Although daily off-duty time requires drivers to take adequate time to rest/sleep, there may be situations where a driver is unable to take the required 10 hours of off-duty time in a day. Drivers can then choose to defer some of the daily off duty time to the next day pending certain conditions.
The driver can defer up to 2 hours to the following day, but:
- May not defer shift reset off duty (8 hours core rest).
- Does not extend shift totals, it only extends the day.
- Cannot use if split sleeper was used.
- Must have had 8 hours of continuous core rest.
- Deferred time on day 1 must be added to core rest (shift reset time) on day 2.
- In 2 days you may not exceed:
- 26 hours driving
- 28 hours on duty
- In 2 days you must have 20 hours off duty.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
- Should total off duty for the day equal to or exceed 10 hours, but it is all classified as shift reset time, a driver will still be in violation if it does not include 2 hours of "Other off duty", e.g. 8h shift reset that started 3 hours before the end of the previous day and 8 hours shift reset starting 5 hours before the end of the current day with no other off duty.
- A driver does not need to have shift reset time in the day if they are not going to defer off duty. This is on condition that they do not drive after the 16-hour shift limit, e.g. 2 x 5 hours other off duty in the day would be compliant as long they do not drive after the 16th hour.
- No off-duty is required on a day if there is no driving on that day. This is on the condition that drivers take 8 hours off duty before starting to drive.
